Confirming their commitment to community safety, Renton voters have voiced their collective choice, approving Proposition 1 in the August primary election.

Proposition 1 stabilizes Renton RFA’s two-part funding system for a minimum of six years, ensuring that public funding keeps pace with local inflation. The measure restores Renton Regional Fire Authority’s regular property tax levy rate (currently approximately $0.61 per thousand of assessed valuation) to its 2018 levy rate of $1 per $1,000 to “to maintain and adequately fund Renton Regional Fire Authority’s operations.”

Proposition 1 passed with about 61.5 percent of voters saying yes.

“This approval not only strengthens Renton Regional Fire Authority’s funding; it fortifies fire protection and life safety service to the community,” the department said in a statement. “We extend our deepest thanks to all of those who voted in the August Primary Election. Your support of Proposition 1 fortifies our shared commitment to public safety. Thank you for standing with us as we continue toward our vision of a safer, healthier, and stronger Renton community.”

According to Renton Regional Fire Authority, one of the most significant milestones that this approval sets in motion is the replacement of Fire Station 16 with a new 50-year station.

“This is a defining moment for Renton that exemplifies the trust and support we share as a community,” Fire Chief Steve Heitman said in a statement. “We are incredibly grateful for every vote that made Proposition 1 a reality. It affirms our path forward - maintaining a high level of service as community growth continues and rebuilding Fire Station 16 for the future, all while minimizing the financial impact of the measure on taxpayers. This is a shared effort for all of Renton, and together, we are making it a safer place to call home.”
