The first test of the new HOT lanes on State Route 167 \u2013 at least from the commuters\u2019 standpoint \u2013 came Monday morning.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s still a learning curve about the meaning of the different white striping on the nine-mile stretch of freeway between Renton and Auburn, according to officials.<\/p>\n

But, as Craig Stone, Urban Corridors administrator for the state Department of Transportation, said, \u201cIt\u2019s going good so far.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, the Washington State Patrol is enforcing the restrictions on the lanes, according to Stone.<\/p>\n

The key is to cross into the HOT lanes in marked areas, those with dashed white stripes.<\/p>\n

Those who violate the rules face a $124 ticket.<\/p>\n

The HOT lanes \u2013 high-occupancy toll lanes \u2013 opened for business on Saturday, giving solo drivers a chance to use what have been carpool lanes, if they pay a toll.<\/p>\n

The toll is \u201ccollected\u201d using transponders a driver obtains from the state.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, the system \u2013 and motorists \u2013 had to deal with wet pavement, police activity, typical fender benders and I-405 construction closures.<\/p>\n
