The Valley Independent Investigative Team has initiated an investigation into an officer-involved shooting on June 9 involving the Renton Police Department.

According to the department, Renton police officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving hostages in the 9400 block of South 196th Place on June 9, shortly after 5 a.m.

An officer confronted the suspect in the incident, and during the altercation, fired his weapon, striking the vehicle and the suspect, according to the department.

The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle, and additional officers located and stopped the suspect in the 4300 block of East Valley Road. First responders transported the suspect to Harborview Medical Center.

According to the department, the suspect’s condition is unknown as of June 9.

The officer involved in the shooting received no injuries.

The Valley Independent Investigative Team, a collection of investigators from various law enforcement agencies in the region responsible for investigating incidents involving law enforcement, has taken over the investigation into the incident.

The Tukwila Police Department will serve as the lead investigative agency in the Valley Independent Investigative Team’s investigation of the shooting.

A representative of the Renton Police Department did not immediately respond to request for comment.

“By state law, we may not comment or provide details on the case after the Valley Independent Investigations Team takes over,” stated Meeghan Black in response to a request for comment.

The Renton Police Department will not participate in the investigation as a result of involvement in the shooting.
